The principal purpose of the Archive is to raise the profile of women in the history of Wales and encourage the study and understanding of those women’s lives. We also work with the Welsh County Archive Services and the National Library of Wales to help people understand the historic value of women’s papers, photographs and memorabilia and to facilitate the long-term survival of this valuable evidence. We encourage gifts of this sort of material. Go to Deposits for more information on giving to the Archive.

We provide a national network for people interested in researching women’s history. Our Annual Conference provides a forum for students and individual researchers to present work in progress in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and also includes lectures by established historians. Other events include book launches, talks, exhibitions, and women’s history roadshows, sometimes in collaboration with other relevant organisations. We publish a quarterly Newsletter for members.

The Archive now has a membership of nearly 200, united by a passion for the history of women’s lives in Wales. Groups of members undertake specific projects from time to time to further the work of the Archive. We are currently exploring ways to introduce women’s history into school history teaching and the National Curriculum. We work in both Welsh and English, and new members are always welcome. Please go to the Join Us for information and membership forms.

We are a charity financed very largely by members’ subscriptions, but we welcome donations which you can now make on-line. Click on the BigGive link to the left which will take you to the Archive’s page on the BigGive website. Other ways to support the Archive are outlined on the Join Us page.

Archif Menywod Cymru / Women’s Archive of Wales was founded in 1997. For some years prior to this, historians Deirdre Beddoe and Ursula Masson of the University of Glamorgan had been discussing with friends and colleagues the fact that the source materials for the study of women’s history in Wales were in great danger of becoming lost, and a meeting of interested women in December 1997 led to the formation of the Archive.
